SOUTHERN GA BLACK LIQUOR POND REMEDIAL INVESTIGATION
Site: Remedial investigation on black liquor pond at pulp and paper manufacturing facility in Southern Georgia
Content: IST provided client a detailed report which wa agreed by GEPD and also the interrelated remedial plan.
After visiting the site and reviewing available information and data, IST recommended a limited subsurface and ground-water field investigation using the high pH property, black/brown color, and odor of black liquor as indicators. IST's mechanized, vehicle-mounted, direct-push Geoprobe® soil probing system was used to elevate pH in soil. Based on these findings, the GEPD was notified. At the same time, IST conducted a comprehensive series of tests to determine the physical and chemical characteristics of the sludge, the stabilization reagents, and the final stabilized material and then worked out one efficient plan.
Upon review, the GEPD agreed with IST's evaluation and allowed the client to dispose of the stabilized black liquor sludge in the solid waste landfill. As a result, the client saved several million dollars in disposal costs.
